What Do You Grill?

Nick and I officially became homeowners this week. Yes, we bought this house three years ago next month, but I don't think we were true homeowners until now. Know why? Because we didn't have a grill until now. Sure, we had this beast (seriously, beast) of a George Foreman Grill, but that doesn't really count. We couldn't just fire it up, cook our food and then be done with it. No, we had to then spend 20 minutes cleaning the darn thing any time we used it.

So this week we took some birthday money Nick received and the money I made during our garage sale and we bought a grill. Sweet!

Here's where you all come in... Considering Nick and I are novices at the grilling world, we don't have many ideas of what to grill. I know about burgers, dogs and chicken and I remember an episode of America's Test Kitchen a few years ago where they grilled pizza (I know I want to try that!), but what else is there? What do you and your family love to make on your grill?

We love to make kabobs. Your choice of meat and veggies cut in chunks and marinated. Then place on skewers and grilled. Also like veggie pockets....thinly sliced potatoes, onion, etc with a dat of butter and creole seasoning wrapped in foil and put on the grill. Foil pockets also work well with thinly sliced onion, bellpepper, shrimp with a little butter and seasoning. Also love grilled fish.(usually need a fish grill basket. sells for about $10)
Loads of possibilities. Congrats on the grill and have fun firing it up!

We like to marinate chicken breasts in italian salad dressing mixed with balsamic vinegar, then grill those. They are really tasty. They are also good on bread with provolone cheese on top, with some lettuce.

Last night we grilled Ahi Tuna steaks. SO GOOD. I also second the grill basket.

When I grill meat (usually chicken now that has been marinated for at least an hour) I also try to grill vegetables. A really easy one is to marinate zucchini, cut in half length wise, and grill for about the same amount of time as the meat. You can also grill tomatoes (cut in half) the same way - but for less time) I haven't tried squash yet, but if you can roast them you should be able to grill them.

I love red skin potatoes (cut into quarters) and place them in a tin foil bag (you may need to make it since I think they stopped selling them premade). Then you put lots of margarine in there and Old Bay seasoning. Close up the bag and plop it on the grill. Cook for a while, then flip it and cook longer. They are so yummy!

Another yummy grill treat is zucchini :) Slice it long ways so you have long thin pieces and lay them directly on the grill. Put a little pepper on them...mmmm!!
