If you've had (or currently have) giveaways on your blog, I need your help... How did you get those items to giveaway?! I know some bloggers will buy the item themselves but I see a lot of the word "donated" used when talking about the prize. Did you contact the companies directly? Did they come to you? Are you using some sort of special prize clearinghouse website? Do all just have insane readerships? I mean, I like to think I have a decent readership (close to 200 a day).... What's the deal?
Basically I'm asking because I would love to do some giveaways for the boys' birthday later this month but I'm at a loss as to how to get some! Help!

Helen - I had a company email me. I did some research and they are legit - I actually need to get back to them. I know for some giveaways, it's b/c the blogger has purchased an item from somewhere (ex, Etsy) and blogs about how great it is.
One time I won a giveaway, and once I received the product I emailed the company and asked if they'd like me to do a review of it in conjunction with a giveaway.
Another thing you can do is sign up with Blog Friendly PR (click the link on my blog sidebar). I signed up last week and already have received a couple of pitches from companies to do reviews/giveaways. You can also contact blog-friendly companies from their listing on the site.
I'm curious about this myself. I have been hoping to do some giveaways, but have no idea how to get started.
I do know myblogspark.com does some things and I have signed up, but so far I've just had a coupon offer to put on my blog.
I have a friend that bakes things (for local friends) that read her blog. I don't know what she does for those far off, but she doesn't have the readership you do!
